Admission to the Library
The NITK Central Library is exists primarily to support the educational and research needs of the NITK faculty, researchers, staff and students. NITK ID qualify for admittance to the Central Library and borrowing privileges.
All members are required to deposit their personal belonging at the property counter at their own risk. The library is not responsible for any loss or damage to the same. Taking a bag inside the library is strictly forbidden.

Rules on Overdue Materials:
Books may be renewed for further period provided no other reader has reserved for the book. The renewal request should come, before the expiry of due date. No more than three consecutive renewals shall be allowed. Librarian in the interest of the library service can demand the return of any library materials from any user before expiring the due date. Students have to return the books on or before the due date. A fine of Rs.0.50 per book per day will be levied, if the books are not returned within the expiry date.
Loss/ Damage of Library Materials
Library resources are costly and are often rare. Handle Library books and other materials with care and respect. Library items should not be written on, defaced, tempered with or
torn. Before leaving the issue counter, member should satisfy themselves as to whether the library material lent to them is in sound condition. If not , they should immediately bring the matter to the knowledge of the library staff at the issue counter; otherwise, they are liable to be held responsible for replacing the material or paying such compensation as fixed by the librarian.
Keeping in mind that the library is a place of individual study and research, members should maintain an atmosphere of dignity, peace and silence within the library premises.
Display your Identity card, when requested to do so by the Library Staff.
Outwears, brief cases, handbags, files, umbrellas and similar items should be deposited at the check point before entering the library.
Use of mobile phones inside the library is strictly prohibited. No refreshments or foodstuff of any kind shall be consumed anywhere inside the library.
A misplaced book is temporarily lost. To avoid misplacement, books which are taken from the open shelves should be left on the nearest table/trolley.
Members should return all materials borrowed from the library before proceeding on any kind of long leave.
The librarian has the power to cancel the tickets and refuse admission to anyone who violates the rules and regulations of the library or indulges in any other type of misconduct.
FAQs - Central Library
Who are authorised to use the Library?
All students, faculty members and staffs of the Institute are authorized to use the library. Student alumni, retired staff members and visiting faculties also have the privilege to use the central library.
(However, for availing the borrowing facilities, users need to enrol themselves as library members on fulfilling the requisite procedures.)
How can an outsider use the Library?
Faculty/students of the other universities/ colleges and individuals affiliated to corporate bodies like industries, can use the library as Institutional members. They are requested to contact with the Librarian/ Astt. Librarian for seeking membership details.
Can a bound volume of journals be issued to a member?
Yes, Bound volume of journals can be issued to faculty members only for the period of three days.
Can current (unbound) issue of journals be issued to library members?
Yes, current (unbound) issue of journals are issued to faculty members only for overnight.
Can I bring personal books and other reading material to the Library?
No, users are not allowed to bring their personal books or other reading materials to the library (Ground Floor & First Floor). However its is allowed to take personal books and reading material to the Reading Room located at 2nd Floor.
How can I recommend a book for purchase in the Library?
An authorized user can recommend a book for purchase by filling-in a "Book recommendation Form" that can be obtained from the Library Office. The form should then be routed through your Head of the Department for his recommendation.
How can I recommend subscription to a new journal in the Library?
An authorized user can send your request for subscription to a new journal through your Head of the Department / Centre. It may, however, be noted that the Library can subscribe to only a limited number of journals for a given Department / Centre of the institute from the funds allocated to the respective Department / Centre from the total budget of the central library.
